Donna Veloce Returns

Flashy 'TDN Rising Star' Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo) makes her sophomore debut in Sunday's GIII Santa Ysabel S. in Arcadia. The $800,000 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream grad crushed her competition by 9 1/4 lengths first out sprinting here Sept. 28, and her connections immediately tested deeper waters in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 1. Favored in that track-and-trip event, she was a neck second to eventual champion British Idiom (Flashback), and one slot ahead of Bast (Uncle Mo), who came back to upset Donna Veloce in the GI Starlet S. over a good and sealed track at Los Alamitos Dec. 7. Donna Veloce will be joined in the starting gate by fellow Simon Callaghan trainee Paige Anne (Take Charge Indy), who broke through at fifth asking at Los Al Dec. 15 before dominating a Golden Gate optional claimer. Tiz Fake News (Tiznow) was also last seen in San Francisco–she graduated first out sprinting there Jan. 11, and passed her two-turn test Feb. 8. Bob Baffert's record five wins in this event could become six if Don Alberto homebred Storie Blue (Empire Maker) outruns her expected odds. She was second to Paige Anne two back before donning cap and gown by a neck here Jan. 5.
